Why the road matters in Bhutan
Bhutan is a mountain country, and the distance between places is part of what makes the journey feel real. A drive from Thimphu to Punakha crosses Dochula Pass before dropping into a warmer valley; the change in air and vegetation is part of the destination itself.
Longer routes toward Trongsa, Bumthang, and eastern Bhutan offer a different kind of sightseeing. The road follows ridgelines, forests, villages, and rivers, with time to stop when a view or a small conversation asks you to pause.
Making long drives comfortable
A thoughtful itinerary does not hide the driving time. It places the route in a sensible order, chooses useful overnight stops, and leaves room for breaks. Your private vehicle and driver make it possible to adjust the day around weather, road conditions, and how the group is feeling.
Bring layers, water, and patience. The highest passes can be cool even when the valley below is warm, and the best roadside moments are rarely the ones you can schedule precisely.
