Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival Paro – Birding along Pa Chhu – Thimphu

Upon arrival, begin birding along the Pa Chhu river before driving to Thimphu for check-in.

Target Birds

Brown Dipper, Ibisbill, Plumbeous and White-capped Redstarts, Blue Whistling Thrush, Wallcreeper, Common Hoopoe, Siberian Stonechat, Rufous-breasted Accentor, Hodgson's Redstart, Rosy Pipit, Grey-backed Shrike, Oriental Turtle Dove, Russet Sparrow and more.

Day 2

Thimphu to Punakha via Dochu La & Lampelri Park

Birding stops at the iconic Dochu La pass and Lampelri Botanical Garden before visiting the magnificent Punakha Dzong at the confluence of two sacred rivers.

Target Birds

Spotted Nutcracker, Brown-flanked Treecreeper, White-tailed Nuthatch, Eurasian Jay, Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, Green-tailed Sunbird, Speckled Wood Pigeon, Ultramarine Flycatcher, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Spotted Laughingthrush, Bar-headed Geese, Ruddy Shelduck, Tufted Duck and more.

Day 3

Punakha to Phobjikha via Khelekha, Nobding & Lawa La

Birding along high mountain passes, then enjoy the afternoon watching the endangered Black-necked Cranes at Phobjikha Valley.

Target Birds

Spot-winged Grosbeak, Himalayan Cutia, Brown-throated Treecreeper, Alpine Thrush, Ward's Trogon, Chestnut-bellied Rock Thrush, Black-necked Crane, Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush, Little Pied Flycatcher, Fire-capped Tit, Himalayan Cuckoo and more.

Day 4· 3 hours (80km)

Pele La Pass to Trongsa

Birding at Pele La pass before continuing to Trongsa to visit the historic Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral home of Bhutan's royal family.

Target Birds

Himalayan White-browed Rosefinch, Solitary Snipe, Himalayan Monal, Bhutan Laughingthrush, Crimson-browed Finch, Rufous-vented Yuhina, Snow Pigeon, Himalayan Vulture, Short-billed Minivet, Northern Lapwing and more.

Day 5· 3 hours (80km)

Zhemgang Road Birding – Trongsa to Bumthang

Early morning birding along the famous Zhemgang road — one of Bhutan's premier birding sites — before continuing to Bumthang with stops at Dorji Goenpa and Yotong La pass.

Target Birds

Mountain Hawk Eagle, Barred Cuckoo Dove, Wedge-tailed Green Pigeon, Black Eagle, Spotted Forktail, Black-eared Shrike Babbler, Rusty-fronted Barwing, Rufous-bellied and Large Niltavas, Sapphire Flycatcher, Black-winged Cuckoo Shrike and more.

Day 63,822m (Thrumshing La)· 6 hours (150km)

Bumthang to Yongkola via Selthang La, Ura & Thrumshing La

A long but extraordinarily rewarding drive crossing the highest road pass in Eastern Bhutan at 3,822m.

Target Birds

Satyr Tragopan, Himalayan Monal, Blood Pheasant, Red Crossbill, Himalayan Beautiful Rosefinch, Slaty-blue Flycatcher, Little Bunting, White-throated Fantail, Hoary-throated Barwing, Great Parrotbill and more.

Days 7–9

Thrumshing La National Park

Three days exploring one of the top birding hotspots in all of Asia. Thrumshing La National Park preserves pristine subtropical and temperate forests teeming with rare and endemic species.

Target Birds

Golden-breasted Fulvetta, Scarlet Finch, Black-throated Parrotbill, Himalayan Cutia, Maroon Oriole, Beautiful Nuthatch, Red-faced Liocichla, Orange-bellied Leafbird, Blue-bearded Bee-eater, Common Green Magpie, Rufous-throated Partridge, Scarlet Minivet, Speckled Piculet and many more.

Day 10· 4 hours (150km)

Yongkola to Bumthang via Namling & Sengor Valley

Return journey with excellent birding stops along Namling, Sengor Valley, and the Thrumshing La pass.

Target Birds

Golden Babbler, Broad-billed Warbler, Hoary-throated Barwing, White-throated Fantail, Red-tailed Minla, Himalayan Bluetail, Rufous-breasted Bush Robin and more.

Day 11· 6 hours (150km)

Bumthang to Punakha via Trongsa

Birding at Tharpaling monastery, then stops along Yotong La, Bjizam and Chendibji valley on the long drive back west.

Target Birds

Snow Pigeon, Himalayan Monal, Himalayan Beautiful Rosefinch, Black-throated Thrush, White-collared Blackbird, Winter Wren, Altai and Alpine Accentors, Blue-fronted and White-throated Redstarts and more.

Day 12· 5 hours (130km)

Tashithang – Punakha – Paro

Early morning birding at Tashithang in Jigme Dorji National Park, then continue through Menchuna village to Paro.

Target Birds

Grey-sided Bush Warbler, Spotted Forktail, Green Shrike Babbler, Whiskered Yuhina, Grey Wagtail, Rufous-winged Fulvetta, Crimson-breasted Woodpecker, Nepal House Martin, Northern Goshawk and more.

Day 133,988m

Chelela Pass

Birding at the highest motorable point in Bhutan, sitting 3,988m above sea level between the Haa and Paro valleys — approximately 1 hour 45 minutes' drive from Paro.

Target Birds

Long-crested Monal, White-winged Grosbeak, White-browed Rosefinch, various Laughingthrushes, Mountain Finches, Nutcrackers and many more high-altitude specialists.

Day 14

Departure
